statement carried by Malaysiakini http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/203665

The Langat 2 project has got nothing to do with the "water crisis" being played up in the media in Selangor, this treatment plant has been planned to be operational only in 2014.

So if SYABAS now says there is a water crisis in Selangor, all fingers are pointed at them. SYABAS is the sole water distributor in Selangor.

This is a clear example of the extent to what a private company will do to the rakyat, when they have the absolute MONOPOLY to distribute and supply water. The cronyism at play here is quite clear. It is highly irresponsible of the Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui and Minister of Agriculture & Agro-Based Industry, Datuk Noh Omar to suggest that the State allow Langat 2 to be built first and discuss water tariff hikes later! We as the state government owe a duty to the rakyat of Selangor. Why waste RM 8.65 billion of public funds, and allow a potential water tariff hike of up to 70% when the water level in the 7 dams in Selangor are full to the brim and overflowing.

The real issues that is being ignored are :
(i) almost 30% of all treated water is going to WASTE (this is known as Non-Revenue-Water);
(ii) the refusal of SYABAS and Puncak Niaga to transfer all water assets to the state government (in Janbuary 2012 Selangor offered for the 3rd time more than RM 10 billion) ;
(iii) the refusal of  Dato' Sri Peter Chin to use his ministerial powers under Section 114(1) of the Water Services Industry Act (WSIA)
      (which allows the minister to assume complete or partial control of water assets and business “for national interests” and “shall not be challenged, appealed against, reviewed,
        quashed or questioned in any court”)

Referring to the statement today made by Syabas Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ruslan Hassan on the possibility of water rationing during the month of Ramadhan. I call on SYABAS has to be responsible and directly inform the state as to the actual situation on the ground. The state will then implement a response team comprising of all the relevant agencies to immediately tackle the situation. Meanwhile we ask the all parties to act professionally in dealing with the present situation.

Selangor State Executive Councillor (EXCO)

The State govt must go all out to explain this to the people. Dont get into defensive position.

Question - can't the Selangor State government draw up pre-emptive plans now to nullify Syabas' threat? Or has it to wait to be caught again as it did by the action of PTPTN over the scholarships for the Unisel students? As a side benefit, the Selangor State government should try to capitalise on this blackmail for the coming 13th GE! The majority of the people are with you.
