RM1 Billion Medical City to Change Face of PJ

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — A “Medical Metropolis” involving over RM1 billion in investment is set to take shape in Petaling Jaya said the Selangor state government today.

The project, part of the state’s economic stimulus package, is expected to be launched in March 2011 and will focus on healthcare, research and education.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said that the Medical Metropolis will change the landscape of Petaling Jaya via new roads and more sophisticated public transport, following a meeting with the project’s developers.

Details of the Medical Metropolis however remain sketchy although the state government said more announcements will be forthcoming.

“This project will have a potentially big impact on the development of the country because it could be the first such project to be built,” said Khalid in a statement to the media.

He added that the project could attract investors and GLCs to get involved in healthcare research as well as provide 4,000 jobs.

The state has launched several other major initiatives such as the Klang river clean-up project which it hopes will help generate RM50 billion in investments.

The delivery of the projects will be watched closely as a measure of how well the Pakatan Rakyat administration is able to handle matters such as the economy and development and could impact its chances in the next state election.
