522 Police Reports and Counting

PETALING JAYA: A total of 522 police reports have been lodged over the past four days calling for the release of the six Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members held under the Emergency Ordinance.

The reports were filed nationwide against Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar and his deputy Khalid Abu Bakar.

The campaign which began on Saturday is one of the efforts to exert pressure on the authorities to release the detainees, now known as the EO6. Other efforts include nightly candlelight vigils, handing over of memorandums and a signature drive.

“This is the total number until yesterday. People are still making their reports,” said campaign coordinator M Nalini when contacted.

She said the largest number of reports were made in Perak. One of those detained, Dr D Michael Jeyakumar, is an MP (Sungai Siput) in that state.

The other detainees are PSM deputy president M Saraswathy, central committee members Choo Chon Kai and M Sugumaran, Youth chief R Sarathbabu and Sungai Siput branch secretary A Letchumanan.

Police: We’re investigating
Contacted later, Perak CID chief SAC II Dzuraidi Ibrahim said the reports filed in the state would be forwarded to the Penang police, which arrested the six.

“We have been taking their statements. We will accept their reports and refer them to the investigating officer in Penang because that is where the six were arrested,” he told FMT.

Penang police chief Ayub Yaakob said the police are “looking into the matter”.

“We will compile the reports and investigate. From time to time, (federal police headquarters) Bukit Aman will issue statements on the development (of the case),” he said.

The six were among 30 PSM members arrested on June 26 over the charge of waging war against the King. PSM and numerous other quarters dismissed this as ludicrous.

After the expiry of their seven-day remand order on July 2, the six were re-arrested under the EO, which provides for detention without trial.

Meanwhile, family members have lodged reports against the police over alleged mistreatment of the detainees.

N Sasinthradevi, who is Sarasvathy’s cousin and A Manivelu, who is Letchumanan’s brother, each lodged report at the Kampung Tawas police station in Ipoh.

In the reports, Sasinthradevi claimed that Sarasvathy had complained of chest and gastric pain when she visited the latter on July 15.

However, to date the police had failed to inform the family members about providing them medical care.

Manivelu in his report alleged that Letchumanan, who is suffering from piles, was not provided with proper food.

He added that his brother is also worried about the police interrogation methods after being forced to undergo a lie detector test.
